The Western Allies could not interact with every single German directly, but they recognized the wide appeal of sport in Germany and how this had been exploited and abused by the Nazis. They therefore increased their programmes designed to foster democratic ideals in Germany through sport activities, exchange visits and promoting teamwork, fair play and sportsmanship, even as they decreased the number of Military Government personnel. Through encouraging ‘democratic’ sport and youth activities, as practiced at home in the United States, Britain and France, the Western Allies hoped to influence relatively large numbers of ‘ordinary’ Germans, prevent a revival of Nazi ideas and promote democratization and eventual international reconciliation. The Allied attempt to reform German sport was therefore a significant part of ‘doing occupation’, as they sought to translate their geopolitical aims for a new Germany into practical activities that could directly reach individual Germans, in addition to establishing new institutions and working indirectly through social, political and business elites.
